7 Things to Organize in May to Prep for Summer

May is that sweet spot between early spring cleaning and full-blown summer chaos. If you're a parent, you’re probably juggling all of the end-of-year school events, summer camp sign-ups, and maybe even planning a vacation?! Before summer really kicks off, now is the perfect time to set yourself up for success—with less clutter and more calm.

Here are 7 things to organize in May that will make your summer feel smoother, lighter, and more enjoyable

1. Swap Out Winter Gear

Say goodbye to coats, boots, snow pants, and all those winter accessories! Now’s the time to clean, donate, or store anything you won’t need until fall. Use labeled bins for storage and tuck them into hard-to-reach spots so your prime spaces are reserved for summer essentials. Toss in a few cedar planks for natural moth protection, and if you're storing bulky items like puffy coats, try vacuum-seal bags inside your bins to save space.

Pro Tip: If it didn’t get worn this winter, it probably won’t next year either. Let it go.

2. Prep Your Outdoor Space

Whether you have a patio, stoop, backyard, or just a few planters—get it summer-ready. Wipe down furniture, toss broken outdoor toys, and set up a simple bin for bubbles, sidewalk chalk, or gardening tools.

Suggested Product:  Suncast outdoor deck box

3. Refresh your Pantry for Summer Staples

Take stock of grilling basics, quick snacks, and picnic-friendly items. Toss anything expired and restock with crowd-pleasers like granola bars, fruit pouches, and easy drink mixes.

Quick Win: Create a labeled “Summer Grab-and-Go” bin stocked with your kids’ favorite snacks so they can help themselves. I love using handled bins like this one with clients who have young kids—they make snack time easier for everyone.

4. Rotate Kids’ Clothes and Toys

Out with the fleece and footie PJs—time to make space for shorts, swimsuits, and sandals. If you’re children have lots of swimsuits, these storage bags make selecting the suit of the day a breeze!  While you're at it, evaluate what still fits and what can be passed along. Same for toys: if it hasn't been touched in months, it might be time to donate.

Bonus: This is a great time to prep for camp packing too! Don’t forget to order your personalized labels!

5. Organize Travel Essentials

Planning a beach trip or weekend getaway? Start now by creating a go-to bin or drawer with sunscreen, travel-size toiletries, bug spray, and first aid supplies. Check expiration dates—there’s nothing worse than realizing your sunscreen doesn't work after you've been in the sun. Ouch!

Pro Tip: Store passports, chargers, and other must-haves in a labeled pouch so you’re not scrambling the night before you leave.

6. Tune Up the Car

Your car becomes your summer sidekick—road trips, camp drop-offs, beach days. Clean out the clutter, stock it with seasonal essentials (wet wipes, snacks, towels), and double-check the trunk for picnic gear or beach chairs.

Try This: Never a fun topic, but if you have a child who is prone to car sicknesses these bags will be your best friend. Trust me!

7. Declutter the Garage or Entryway

These areas tend to become a holding zone for scooters, sports gear, and backpacks. Use vertical hooks or open bins to give every item a home. It’ll make summer mornings less stressful—especially when you’re running late.

A Little Effort Now = A More Peaceful and Fun Summer

Getting organized in May isn’t about being perfect—it’s about creating breathing room before summer kicks into high gear. Even small wins—like swapping out kids’ clothes or clearing the trunk of your car—can make a big difference in your daily flow.
